Mobile Screening -näyttelykonsepti

Screening Helsinki -näyttelyprojektissa valokuvataidetta esitetään uudella tavalla. Teokset projisioidaan ulkotilassa rakennuksen seinään. Projisiointi tapahtuu autoon asennetun kaluston avulla, joten näyttely voidaan laittaa pystyyn lähes missä vain mihin auton voi ajaa. Näyttely pitää sisällään 15 valokuvataiteilijan teoksia (Mari Aaltonen, István Balogh, Katja Bohm, Lucie Dubreuil, Mikko Enqvist, Jenni Haili, Jyrki Kirjalainen, Tuija Lappalainen, Viivi Nieminen, Karoliina Paappa, Tanel Päll, Jari Silomäki, Virpi Stjerna, Sari Tervaniemi ja Séllei Zsolt). Screening Helsinki on kiertänyt aiemmin Helsingissä ja Tampereella. Tarton matka oli ensimmäinen ulkomaan näyttely.

Screening Helsinki Tartu suunnittelu

Tarton projekti aloitetiin syyskuussa 2011. FRAME tuki hanketta.

-15 astetta. Tarjoiluna oli viiniä, teetä ja karkkia.

Näyttelyiltaa seuraavana päivänä lähdettiin melko ajoissa takaisin Helsingin suuntaan. Matkan varrella aikaa riitti henkilökohtaisen taiteellisen työskentelyn toteuttamiseen erään valokuvaprojektin osalta.

Lopuksi

Matka opetti paljon uutta liikkuvasta screening-näyttelystä ulkomailla.

In English

Screening Helsinki continued its journey to Tartu 18th of February 2012

Mobile Screening Exhibition

Screening Helsinki introduces a new kind of outdoors photographic exhibition. There is an individual projection equipment installed inside a car. Building walls are used as a projection surface. So the exhibition can be set up basically anywhere you can drive a car to. The Screening Helsinki exhibition involves 15 photographers’ works (Mari Aaltonen, István Balogh, Katja Bohm, Lucie Dubreuil, Mikko Enqvist, Jenni Haili, Jyrki Kirjalainen, Tuija Lappalainen, Viivi Nieminen, Karoliina Paappa, Tanel Päll, Jari Silomäki, Virpi Stjerna, Sari Tervaniemi and Séllei Zsolt). The exhibition has previously been set up in Helsinki and in Tampere. Tartu was the first destination outside Finland.

Planning the Screening Helsinki Tartu

The plans for the Tartu project began in September 2011. After a grant from FRAME (the Finnish Fund for Art Exchange) the plan was realized. We looked for contact persons in Tartu and made reservations for the trip. Ahto Külvet, the director of Anne Youth Centre was our primary contact. He helped in the preliminary coordination and passed on the practical arrangements to Uku Peterson. Uku searched for the screening spots, got the permits from the city government and marketed the happening in Tartu.

In Tartu the members of Anne Youth Centre’s photo club, a class mentored by Uku, took part in the screening (Anni Nöps, Elge Aas, Elise Keskpaik, Kadi Kähär, Kaisa Maasik, Liisbet Järviste, Mari-Lill Kaul, Marta Jahhu, Martin Kraus, Martina Himma, Rauno Kalda and Ülla Tamm). It was great to have works of local photographers as part of the exhibition. This is a huge advantage in the digital touring exhibition as it is possible to change the contents of the presentation on a very short notice.

The marketing of the exhibition was implemented primarily in the Internet and with an emailed press release. The happening was promoted in the local news paper (Tartu Postimees), in photograhy blogs and in the facebook:

The Trip

A lot had been learned from the previous screenings. Now it was easy to make all the practical arrangements, fix the schedule and pack up all the necessary gear. The trip started a day before the exhbition to prepare for possible surprises on the way.

The screening spots were chosen beforehand. First there was the Tartu University Library at 19:30 – 20:30 (W.Struve 1). The second place was nearby the town square at 21:00 – 22:30 (across the Rüütli and Küütri streets). The presentations went as planned. The library wall was located perfectly and the timing was good: The library was closed at 20:00 and the students walked out to see the screening. There was also an invited audience of about 30 people. In addition to this an estimate of 15 people stayed to see the photographs.

The second spot was a bit far aside from the town square. Many people passed by the place. By the observations it seemed that about 10 people in half an hour stopped for a moment to watch the screening. In conclusion a 2,5 hours pop-up exhibition gathered quite good audience in regards that it was about -15 degrees Celsius that night. Wine, tea and candy was served to the audience.

The journey continued back to Helsinki the next day. On the way back there was enough time to stop a couple of times to take photographs regarding another project. So, there was also a chance to carry out another artistic project on the trip.

In Conclusion

A lot was learned about how to arrange a mobile exhibition in a foreign country. Preliminary arrangements are a vital part of a successful screening. For this, it is necessary to have a reliable contact person in the destination. The trip could have been longer. After the screening it would have been good to stay for a day or two more and meet again the persons we met only briefly at the screening. Now the plan is to visit Tartu again during the Spring to carry out these meetings. It was an honour to have the local young photographers’ works as part of the exhibition! If possilbe, in the future we will also ask photographers from the screening destination to take part in the screening.

Tartu University Library liked the screening really much and they decided to set up their own photographic exhibition with the same concept in the same place during the Spring.

The Screening Helsinki project takes a break after the Tartu trip. A video was shot on the trip and a short documentary will be edited out of it.

The next mobile screening exhibition project will take us to Hungary in the summer of 2012.

Moving Gallery’s new exhibition is here! We asked for animations that are about 60 seconds ‘short’.

Wikipedia defines stop motion as follows: ‘Stop motion (also known as stop action) is an animation technique to make a physically manipulated object appear to move on its own. The object is moved in small increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames is played as a continuous sequence.’

The exhibition is now here at movinggallery.net. We will take the exhibition outside hopefully during the August. Thanks for all the artists involved! And thank you, audience.

Here are the animations:

Screening Helsinki was arranged at Asematunneli, Helsinki on Friday 18th of November 2011. Helsinki Asematunneli (station tunnel, Asematunneli in Wikipedia) is an underground level with small shops and kiosks in between the ground level and the metro tunnels.

For the presentation there was a 3 channel projection. In two of the channels there was the same video stream, in one channel there was a seperate one. Both of these stream looped the Screening Helsinki photography presentation slide show. The opening of the exhibition was held on Friday 18th of November 2011 from 5 to 8pm. The screening continued until Monday night 11pm during the opening hours of Asematunneli.

The technology and space for the Asematunneli screening was provided by Renna Group Ltd.

Jyrki Kirjalainen and a representative of the Renna Group acted as gallerists on the opening night. There were couple of chairs setup for the screening guests and candy was served at the opening. Some of the invitees arrived to see the show and there were discussions about the Asematunneli space as a place for art.

At Asematunneli there is always something happening. Nowadays there are more security guards than what there was in the 90′s, and the environment is much less hostile than what it used to be back then. Commuters and other people going from place A to B pass the undergroung space quickly, switching between metros, trains and busses. Some people hang around in the space until the security guards lead them outside the tunnel as loitering is forbidden in the Asematunneli.

In the tunnel there are lots of advertisements, posters and bright lights, so catching one’s attention with a somewhat discreet photographic exhibition is not easy. As we attended the opening for 3 hours, we saw lots of people passing by the screening without noticing it. But as some people noticed the photographs, they stopped and watched the show for a while. Guests who came by invitation were pleased to see art in the Asematunneli space.

Overall capacity of the audience passing by during the three hours must’ve been over a thousand. About 70 people noticed the photograhic exhibition and about 20 people stopped at the presentation. About 15 invited guests arrived.

The opening hours of Asematunneli are Mon – Sat, 7am – 11pm and Sun, 10am – 11pm. So we got exhibition time for the total of 51 hours which is about 7 working days. It’s quite hard to estimate the amount of audience reached, but as an act of art bringing a photographic exhibition in a place like this is something to talk about!

I would especially like to thank Renna Group for providing this artistic exhibition! Also thanks for the audience and thanks for the photographers that participates Screening Helsinki exhibiton!

Helsingin Rakennusvirastoteknisistä syistä Backlight Screeningin ulkoilma-kuvaesitys järjestettiin Lasipalatsin Mediakeskuksen omistamalla videoprojektorilla, joka on sijoitettu osoittamaan kyseisen rakennuksen sisäpihan puoleiseen suureen seinään.

Ilmeisesti koska kohde oli niin lähellä Moving Galleryn satama-asemaa Ruoholahtea, tuli kiire ehtiä aloittamaan näytös klo 20. Nopean kuljettajan ansiosta dia-show lähti kuitenkin pyörimään n. viisi minuuttia myöhässä ennakoidusta.

Photographic exhibitions are most often presented us as prints inside a gallery space. Backlight Photo Festival made an exception this year by introducing part of the exhibition as an outdoor screening. Selection of the exhibition works were taken around the Pirkanmaa region and projected on walls of buildings. This way the exhibition reached a new audience. Backlight Screening was also a good way to promote the main exhibition.

At Mänttä-Vilppula

The tournee was made during one weekend from 16th to 18th of Sempteber 2011. In the show there were photographs from 11 artists. The crew left Tampere at around 6 p.m. for the first screening at 7. There were from two to three shows per night. The locations were selected beforehand; Akaa, Hämeenkyrö, Kangasala, Mänttä-Vilppula, Orivesi, Pälkäne and Ylöjärvi. On Saturday a surprise screening was held in the center of Tampere for the Backlight invitees, including some of the artists.

Nomad screening is nothing new. There used to be people travelling around the villages with a movie projector and some featured films. Now with the new digital technology; digital photogarphy and video projectors it is really easy to implement a travelling exhibition with projected still images or video. The screening vehicle does not need an auxillary power source and the video can be screened anywhere the car can be driven to. It is possible to ask the audience to arrive to the exhibition at agreed time and place, on the other hand the exhibtiion can be taken to a place where there is already potential audience present, such as a market square or a terrace.

Backlight Screening was a clear proof that there is a demand for this kind of exhibition in the municipalities. The respond from the audience was thoroughly postitive and at many locations there were discussions about why there wasn’t more audience present. Hopefully more exhibitions will be extended into outdoors and people will get used to these screenings.

At Akaa

The Backlight Screening was planned and carried out by Jyrki Kirjalainen of the Moving Gallery. Jaana Ristola assisted in the screenings and also made a documentary video about the happening. The animation in between the slideshow was made by Tanel Päll. Screening music was made by Olli Aarni. Jyrki has graduated from TAMK Art Department few years ago as well as Tanel Päll. Jaana is a third year student. Backlight triennal is arranged by Photographic Centre Nykyaika.
